8th Grade Choir
Students in 8th grade choir continue to develop the music literacy skills and techniques acquired in 7th grade to perform music at a high level within an ensemble. One of the main objectives of this group is to achieve blend, balance, and intonation within their sections as well as within the larger group performing 3-part literature. In addition, students are exposed to various genres of music such as jazz/swing, spirituals, multi-cultural pieces, and repertoire in foreign languages.
Members of this group participate in three formal concerts a year and are expected to attend each one as well as weekly rehearsals.
8th grade choir members will continue developing skills to sing in an ensemble by:
- Demonstrating balance and blend in accompanied three-part harmony
- Demonstrating balance and blend in three-part acapella literature
- Demonstrating proper intonation alone and within the group
- Using solfege syllables and hand signs to sight-read small excerpts
- Using solfege syllables and hand signs to demonstrate major and minor scales and triads
8th grade choir members will continue developing skills for reading music by:
- Identifying dynamic markings within a piece of music
- Identifying different meters
- Identifying specific key signatures
- Composing 12-16 measures of music within specific parameters
